GAFF's core work involves the co-ordination of three collaborative initiatives:
Breaking the Armlock Alliance
This alliance, of 17 farming, consumer, development and environmental organisations was launched in March 2004, and is calling for stricter controls over the major supermarkets' trading practices, particularly to stop them passing on unreasonable costs and demands to farmers and growers in the UK and overseas.
The Alliance is specifically calling for a new statutory code of practice to be imposed on the biggest supermarkets and for a "supermarket watchdog" to be appointed to ensure that the code is enforced and is working effectively.
Tescopoly
Launched in June 2005, Tescopoly is a collaborative initiative of 8 diverse organisations including Friends of the Earth, War on Want and GMB union. Tescopoly aims to raise awareness about Tesco's impact on the food supply chain both in the UK and internationally, on farmers and workers, small businesses, communities and the environment. The campaign also highlights the actions needed to curb the market power of the supermarkets. The Local Campaigns section of the site lists over 60 campaigns opposing supermarket developments around the UK.
Agribusiness Accountability Initiative EU Supermarkets Working Group
GAFF also co-ordinates the Agribusiness Accountability Initiative (AAI) EU Supermarkets Working Group. Our objective is to establish a cross-constituency European network of civil society groups, to raise awareness of supermarket buyer power at the European Parliament. We hope to extend this work to exert pressure on the European Commission in 2007 to introduce new rules to curb supermarket power in Europe. Read our report 'The need for EU Wide Action'.
